Gingival recession
Gum recession is the retreat of the gingival margin, exposing the neck or root of a tooth. It causes sensitivity, aesthetic deterioration, and increased risk of root caries.
The most common causes are improper brushing technique, thin gingival biotype, periodontitis, tooth misalignment, and habitual clenching or grinding of teeth (bruxism).
The gold standard for recession treatment is a connective tissue graft harvested from the palate. Tunnel and envelope techniques allow for minimal invasiveness and optimal coverage of exposed roots.
Modern microsurgical techniques allow coverage of exposed roots in 80–100% of cases. Restoring the proper gum line eliminates sensitivity, improves aesthetics, and protects teeth from further destruction.
